Reasons to Volunteer
Door County Altrusa Club members give these reasons for volunteering:
- To give back to the community through volunteer hours and service.
- To establish a new network of diverse friends and resources.
- To develop skills and leadership not possible through the workplace.
- To do something rewarding for people in need.
- To have fun!
No matter the reason, most people feel better about themselves by becoming more altruistic – by showing unselfish devotion to the interests and welfare of others.
One of my favorite things to do is to help others. Altrusa certainly fulfils my needs with all of its projects. My reward is to see happy faces with their backpacks full at the Back-to-School Fair. Another event is reading to the children at their school. These are just a few of my favorite things that make me happy to be a member of Altrusa.
There are many reasons why I choose to volunteer with Altrusa. The first is that I love reading and think that books not only educate, but transport an individual to another place, time or situation that you normally would not experience. I also love working with children and look forward to reading to the 5K kids. But…meeting individuals who are just as excited about helping others is so important.
I have been reading in kindergarten classrooms for years. So much fun! Helping families get ready for the new school year through our Back-to-School Fair and meeting our Door County Habitat families through our literacy focus on their new home dedication, is an emotional experience.
Also, being surrounded by women who care about our Door County community is very fulfilling.
I volunteer because it allows me to do something special for our community. We live in a unique environment in Door County, and I am so grateful to be able to be involved with individuals that need help.
How to Volunteer
To join Altrusa of Door County you will be sponsored by a current member. We like all potential members to attend three of our regular meetings before joining.
Once a new member has joined, they may begin to be involved in all of the club activities and projects. An orientation session is held for new members where current members discuss all aspects of the club, expectations and responsibilities of membership. New members are initiated at a designated dinner meeting and presented with an Altrusa pin.
If you would like to learn more about Altrusa before making a commitment, please join us at our next dinner meeting. Enjoy a meal with us and explore what we are all about. Please contact us ahead of time so that we can assign a member to greet you and let you know where that month’s meeting will be held. Our email address is: altrusaofdoor@gmail.com or go to our Contact Us page to send us an email through our website.
