For over 25 years, Altrusa has sponsored a Back To School Fair for underserved students of Door County. This exciting program is our most ambitious and highest impact community project, as we meet the growing need of children and families in the community to be ready for the first day of school.

Each year in August, a special day is set aside for children to attend our Fair where they receive class-specific school supplies, backpacks, personal hygiene items, school spirit wear, underwear and a voucher to Dunham’s to select athletic shoes and socks. The youngest children “shop” for their supplies, allowing them the experience that many parents aren’t able to provide. Both our members and volunteer “shopping guides” work the event and leave with an incredible feeling of community.

Local schools assist us in identifying the neediest families, and parents choose to apply for their children to attend. Over recent years, our applications have ranged from 500 to 700 Door County students. However, we recognize there is greater need, and would love to assist more families.
