Guidelines for Awarding the Mary Louise Kiehnau
Scholarship for Women
Altrusa International of Door County
This scholarship will be awarded to a female student who plans to further her education in an Adult Continuing Education or a degree program. Each applicant must be a resident of Door County for at least six months prior to application. The scholarship application is open to a full or part-time female student who have attended at least one year of continuing education or a woman returning to school with the intent of improving their career potential. Scholarships will be awarded based on the applicant’s desire to improve her education, financial need, academic ability and community service.
There will be up to five scholarships awarded for the first semester (fall/winter) and up to five for the second semester (winter/spring). Two alternates will also be chosen for each semester. Scholarship money in the amount of $750 per student/ per semester will be sent directly to the awardee’s school. The applicant must be able to show proof of acceptance to a college, university, or technical school.
Please include the following with your application:
- Cover letter from the applicant
- Information about the applicant (see page 2 & 3)
- Two or more currently dated letters of recommendation from the Door County Community (i.e. clergy, employers, teacher, etc.)
- It is preferred that you provide high school or college transcripts).
- Proof of acceptance to a college, university, or technical school
If an application is submitted without these items, it will be disqualified.
Scholarships are awarded to the five most qualified applicants each semester. In the event an applicant does not follow through with her plans for school, the scholarship will be awarded to the alternate. The funds will only be applied toward the applicant’s tuition or book/supply needs for the semester it is awarded.
Completed applications should be sent to Anita Karwowski, 1837 Kentucky St., Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 and must be postmarked on or before July 1st for the fall/winter semester and on or before December 15th for the winter/spring semester. Applicants may call Anita at (920) 746-4066 to verify receipt of the application. The scholarship applicant will be notified of acceptance or denial no later than one month after the application deadline.
Applicants may apply even if they have been turned down previously or if they have already received the scholarship for a previous semester.
Application forms in hard copy format are available at NWTC, UWGB, HELP of Door County, the Door County Job Center, or Door County Social Services. Forms in PDF format are posted on the Altrusa of Door County website www.altrusaofdoorcounty.org or send a request via e-mail Anita Karwowski at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Mary Louise Kiehnau Scholarship for Women is open to all women who meet the requirements listed above including Altrusa members and their families.
